A private paradise tucked away in Alaska's wild interior.

Alaska's premier hotelier Within the Wild can be best described in one word: authentic. Surrounded by forest to the north and facing a quiet and lovely lake to the south, Winterlake  Lodge offers the opportunity to explore the dramatic mountain life of Alaska. Winterlake is nestled alongside a one-mile lake that is home to nesting loons and swans. Nearby sits the dramatic Tordrillo Mountains and Rainy Pass. A helicopter ride through Alaska’s wild interior gives the opportunity to touch earth that has never before been visited by humans. As one of the few fly-in lodges open nearly all year in Alaska, Winterlake gives visitors the rare opportunity to experience America’s last frontier throughout the seasons.

Go sportfishing, search for gold, glacier trek, and forage for wild berries all while taking in the local wildlife. Join owners Carl and Kirsten Dixon at the lodge for an exhilarating 4-day dog mushing school program and learn about the famed Iditarod — known as “The Last Great Race on Earth. Winterlake offers the perfect opportunity for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing the backcountry, and taking exploratory trips down the Iditarod Trail. At the lodge, delight in an unforgettable three-course meal showcasing the best of Alaskan fine dining. Finally, after a long day of alpine hiking and river rafting, retire to a large comfortable cabin and admire the Northern lights from your window or the rustic cedar hot tub.

Regenerative Impact

  •  Generators are off for several hours each evening to conserve on fuel
  • Off-grid self-contained electric, sewer, and water systems
  • At Winterlake, composting toilets are used in the winter for all guest cabins. All employees use outhouses instead of flushing toilets to save water
  • Abandoned hunting camps are cleaned and leftover trash remains are hauled out by a helicopter
  • Lights are turned off in rooms and the lodge when not in use.
  • Wood burning stoves are used in our main lodge instead of central heatIng. (Only dead standing trees are cut down)
  • Non-perishables such as rice, beans, flours, grains in bulk are used to avoid packaging waste. Non-perishables are stored in sealable airtight (and pest proof) bins for longevity
  • Much of our perishable and fresh products are purchased from local farmers who deliver in returnable boxes or in totes provided by the lodge
  • Only Alaskian fish is purchased. Beef and other primal proteins are sourced from local farmers or from west coast small farmers.
  • No single-use plastic is used other than sturdy garbage bags. This includes straws, cups or water bottles, plastics food film or wrap. Since recycle waste is flown in airplanes to Anchorage and the lodge is located in heavily bear-populated areas, garbage needs to be secured into transportable containers.
  • Any food waste from the kitchen is weighed and discussed. It is placed into tubs and sent to a local farmer to compost and feed his animals.
  • Used kitchen cooking oil is taken to a reclamation center
  • Rechargeable batteries and USB rechargeable are utilized where possible. Spent batteries are taken to a reclamation center.
  • Reusable kitchen hand towels are washed and sterilized for continual use. A hydrogen peroxide solution is used as a surface disinfectant.
  • Strong efforts are made to use ingredients found the in natural landscapes, both wild and cultivated
  • Fair-trade coffee
  • High-tunnel greenhouses are used to grow organic food as well as water catchment for watering these spaces
  • LED light bulbs are used at all properties
  • Sustainability practices are documented on Green View Portal
  • Practices are additionally reported to National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World sustainability team
