A private escape in one of Mexico's most vibrant regions

Experience Tulum, without the crowds. At this private beachside villa, you can escape the tourists and relax in total peace. Olas Tulum considers itself a “Mexican speakeasy”—a truly hidden gem designed for comfort and exploration of Mexico’s tropical beauty. Located at the entrance of a 1.3 million acre biosphere reserve, it’s not uncommon to find endangered sea turtles nesting on the hotel’s beach. Here you can connect with nature at the bird’s eye yoga studio overlooking the Caribbean, while the many cenotes of the region create a magical setting in which you can immerse yourself in the wild beauty of the environment without interruption.

It’s this stunning setting that motivates Olas Tulum to ensure that it creates a positive impact on the land around it. Built over 40 years ago, the villa is one of the oldest structures on Tulum beach, and as such does not use air conditioning. Instead, the hotel is cooled by the ocean breezes and strategically-placed fans throughout the rooms. Olas Tulum is also 100% sustainable, utilizing solar energy for nearly all of its energy needs. The hotel captures underground water and rainwater, and recycles greywater and compost to revitalize the surrounding ecosystem.

Regenerative Impact

  • Powered by solar energy from photovoltaic panels on the roof
  • Property’s intricate system collects rainwater, used to feed the indigenous vegetation on site by hand
  • Property is fed by an underground river system that captures water from neighboring cenote, transfers to cisterns on the roof and then gravity feeds into each suite
  • All fruits and vegetables in the cocina come from regional farms, eggs and cheese from the Mennonite community and seafood from local fishermen
  • Committed to cooking with fresh produce daily and limiting kitchen waste
  • Compost organic food onsite and use it to feed vegetation throughout the year
  • Invested heavily into septic system – called a “Pirana” — an aerobic bacteria generator, turning organic solid waste into non-harmful grey water
  • Installed a “humidal” – a traditional Mayan treatment system that turns this grey water into water that feeds phosphorus loving plants
  • Architecture built in 1970s by Carlos Schober, who specifically designed it to work in synthesis with the surrounding natural environment: the curvature of the walls help to channel the flow of the sea breeze to eliminate the need for air-conditioning (also referred to as the “venturi effect”)
  • Platinum LEED certified
