Regenerative Impact

Saving sea turtles, providing medical care, promoting local designs and launching education programmes – Song Saa Foundation’s projects are diverse in scope. Using science, innovation and collaboration to implement useful and impactful actions, we divide our programmes into the main categories of water, people and land.

Since 2012, Cambodia’s Fishery Administration (FiA), in collaboration with Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and other project collaborators, such as Song Saa Foudantion, has been engaged in a shared effort. Their primary objective has been the preservation of Cambodia’s marine environment. As a significant stride towards bolstering the safeguarding of marine biodiversity and supporting the livelihoods of local fisheries, the Koh Rong Archipelago now hosts Cambodia’s inaugural large-scale Marine Protected Area.
In Cambodia, a staggering reality reveals itself: a shocking 45% of the nation’s population grapples with malnourishment, while an even more distressing 75% face this challenge within the Koh Rong Archipelago. Recognizing the gravity of this issue, the Song Saa Foundation has taken a proactive stance, collaborating with local communities to confront the pressing health concerns of the region. Year after year, the Song Saa Collective joins forces with International Medical Relief (IMR) in a remarkable effort. Together, they orchestrate a comprehensive health mission that spans the entire archipelago, delivering essential medical services to villagers who eagerly participate in the mission’s village clinics.
In collaboration with the local community, the Song Saa Foundation has taken the lead in establishing a solid waste management system in the village of Prek Svay. This initiative has encompassed informative workshops, the creation of a waste management facility, and the provision of assistance for a dedicated waste collection team. The overarching goal is to extend the current waste management initiatives to an additional three communities within the Koh Rong archipelago.
Over the next five years, their primary objective is to enhance the resilience of local communities in response to changing climates. The goal is to ensure a year-round supply of freshwater to an additional 5000 mangrove saplings. These aspirations form an integral part of a broader, comprehensive strategy to address the challenges stemming from ocean warming and drier seasons. In 2015, a study they conducted highlighted the strong awareness within local communities regarding the evolving climate and the associated risks. These concerns have presented the Song Saa Foundation with a valuable opportunity to enhance the resilience of local communities in the face of environmental changes, all while actively participating in the conservation of marine habitats.
