Regenerative Impact

Founded with fifteen years of experience on Sumba Island, Ngalung Kalla Eco Retreat is built with the three tenets of Permaculture in mind: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share.

The Organic Wealth center at Ngalung Kalla offers courses on Permaculture Design and Natural Building where guests learn to apply practical Permaculture methods, develop action plans, and how to be guided by nature in daily life. The majority of the ingredients consumed at the resort are grown in their extensive agroforestry orchards.
Ngalung Kalla follows the highly-regarded fishing model developed by the Locally Managed Marine Area standards and guidelines. The dedicated conservation area is managed by the local community allowing only traditional fishing methods and banning gillnets, poisons, bombs, dive lights, and spearguns from an area. Traditional hook and line and throw net styles of fishing are still accepted.
To get to zero-waste, the property uses various composting methods and re-uses waste water to benefit their extensive agroforestry systems. Vermicomposting is used to treat waste water from communal areas and the bedrooms use Bason style dry composting toilets. The compost and waste water nourishes and benefits extensive veggie gardens, agroforestry projects, and fruit trees. By closing these waste loops the property creates a lot of abundance and is significantly lighter on the resources.
Using only 5% of the 250 hectares of conservation land to build the retreat, Ngalung Kalla was built 100% from local materials and with 100% local labor. The design honors the three tenets of Permaculture: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share.
