Basata Ecolodge

Sit back and take in the spectacular seascapes and tranquility of the Egyptian Red Sea, set in a haven respecting Bedouin culture.

Tucked between two desert hills and overlooking the soothing Red Sea in South Sinai, Egypt, Basata Ecolodge values simplicity and respect for its surrounding environment and native Bedouin culture above all else. Founded as an antidote to the exhausting rat race of life in overstimulating cities like Cairo, Basata invites visitors to switch off and reconnect with nature.

With a devotion to thoughtful hospitality that considers both people and place, Basata Ecolodge has thoughtfully designed bamboo huts and traditional adobe chalets that sit on the shores of the Red Sea in the Gulf of Aqaba. The lodge’s activities allow guests to take a step back from the modern world and appreciate the historic wonder that sits in Egypt’s South Sinai mountains.

Regenerative Impact

Founded in harmony with the South Sinai mountains and Red Sea coastline, Basata Ecolodge strives to preserve and honor the landscapes and culture of its local Bedouin community.

The lodge’s rooms, either bamboo huts or adobe chalets, were designed using natural materials to blend in thoughtfully with its surrounding desert landscape. The huts and chalets were built and decorated in keeping with Egyptian architecture and Bedouin artisan craft.
Fully aware of the damaging effects of global warming on coral populations, Basata takes care to educate guests and team members on how best to preserve the coral and prohibits fishing and boat use along the coastline. They also closely monitor the health of the reefs.
Basata Ecolodge prides itself on being Egypt’s first ecolodge and is leading the way in reducing human impact on the environment. Basata is working to eliminate single-use plastic in its operations, 80% of its waste is currently reused or recycled and it has no air conditioning on-site to reduce energy use.
Basata owners Sherif and Maria maintain close ties with the local Bedouin community and in 1998 established an NGO, Hemaya, dedicated to supporting it in several areas. Basata only works with local Bedouin guides to provide them with sustainable employment opportunities, supports Bedouin women in showcasing and selling their artisan crafts at the lodge, and distributes Ramadan boxes every year to ensure vulnerable families in the community are fed. They also converted a local house into a kindergarten for Bedouin children and during afternoons, this house becomes a training center to empower local Bedouin women.

Pioneering in Pokhara, Nepal: The Story of Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge

Historically a commercial hub connecting India and Tibet, Pokhara evolved to be a metropolitan city with far more to offer than just trade. Tucked into the Himalayas and sitting on the picturesque Phewa Lake, Pokhara let nature lead the way. The name for Nepal’s second largest city comes from the Nepali word “Pokhari” meaning “pond” so it’s no surprise that natural formations are Pokhara’s greatest protagonist.

Key Lessons from 3 Caribbean Hotels Leading the Way in Regenerative Practices

We explore leading examples of regenerative tourism practices being implemented by three Caribbean hotels such as Hamanasi Resort in Belize, Jade Mountain in Saint Lucia and Rockhouse Hotel in Jamaica at our panel discussion hosted by Davines in Brooklyn, New York. These organizations are not only adopting regenerative practices, but they are also helping to educate people on the importance of sustainability and creating programs to put regulations in place.
