The resort’s own non-profit, the Fundación Grupo Puntacana has been a leader in the development of communities throughout the Punta Cana region. From providing primary care to thousands of local patients each year to encouraging entrepreneurship and helping hundreds of students to graduate in technical skills that support the tourism industry, the Foundation takes a wide-ranging approach to addressing local community challenges.
Since opening 45 years ago, Tortuga Bay has designed and implemented one of the largest integrated solid waste management and recycling projects in the Dominican Republic. They also lead the Partnership for Ecologically Sustainable Coastal Areas (PESCA), an expansive coral reef restoration and conservation program, while their unique research facility, the Center for Sustainability, engages some of the best universities in the world for research programs that seek to provide solutions to environmental challenges. The resort was also named as the Current Ambassador of Sustainable Tourism by the World Tourism Organization in 2021.
Tortuga Bay was built in accordance with licensing from the Dominican Ministry of the Environment including permitting processes of an environmental impact assessment, an environmental management assessment and a public hearing to present the hotel’s construction plan. The resort was also built to feature local vegetation, landscaping and coastal resources.
The Fundación Grupo Puntacana pioneered the first Zero Waste project in the Dominican Republic in 2007. The team at the foundation work continuously on the culture and policies of waste classification in order to recycle and not accumulate waste while their efforts have since been featured in leading business school case studies.

Pioneering in Pokhara, Nepal: The Story of Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge

Historically a commercial hub connecting India and Tibet, Pokhara evolved to be a metropolitan city with far more to offer than just trade. Tucked into the Himalayas and sitting on the picturesque Phewa Lake, Pokhara let nature lead the way. The name for Nepal’s second largest city comes from the Nepali word “Pokhari” meaning “pond” so it’s no surprise that natural formations are Pokhara’s greatest protagonist.

Key Lessons from 3 Caribbean Hotels Leading the Way in Regenerative Practices

We explore leading examples of regenerative tourism practices being implemented by three Caribbean hotels such as Hamanasi Resort in Belize, Jade Mountain in Saint Lucia and Rockhouse Hotel in Jamaica at our panel discussion hosted by Davines in Brooklyn, New York. These organizations are not only adopting regenerative practices, but they are also helping to educate people on the importance of sustainability and creating programs to put regulations in place.
