Regenerative Impact

Matetsi Victoria Falls is on a mission to conserve vast areas of pristine wilderness, protect wildlife and create employment opportunities for Zimbabweans.

MatetsiVictoriaFalls_team2
Matetsi Victoria Falls is dedicated to creating employment and has a 100% Zimbabwean team onsite with 60% of the team employed from the Matabeleland North Province. Aspiring to source their staff as locally as possible, the lodge engages with growers and craftsmen based in the nearest town of Victoria Falls before recruiting from further afield. Matetsi also showcases Zimbabwean talent through two exceptional Zimbabwean chefs who lead their kitchens and endeavour to highlight local cuisine.
Whilst everything they do at Matetsi is done to showcase their breath-taking landscapes, incredible wildlife and the mighty Zambezi river, the lodge also remains on a mission to conserve vast areas of wilderness. So far, Matetsi has safeguarded 9 rivers and protected 136,000 acres of wilderness, home to more than 400 species of wildlife, from the prior decimation caused by poaching and illegal hunting. The journey continues with on-going conservation work, which is carried out by a dedicated conservation team and supported by guides and trackers.
Built on the footprints of a pre-existing lodge, construction materials were reused and repurposed or sourced as locally as possible. The areas around the buildings have also been left intentionally unfenced and “wild” so that elephants and other species can roam freely throughout the land. The architectural design theme of the resort is “Life of the River” and was conceptualized by a female Zimbabwean architect to pay a subtle tribute to the way of life of the people who historically lived along the banks of the Zambezi river. Throughout the lodge, a Zimbabwean artist has also created artworks including a series of 18 pieces that, when brought together, comprise a topographical map of Matetsi Private Game Reserve.
Aside from creating employment for local Zimbabweans and continuing their conservation work, Matetsi Victoria Falls remains committed to their rural communities in Northern Matabeleland. Partnering with the small but incredible non-profit, the Greenline Africa Trust, Matetsi supports the work that they do to help marginalized and vulnerable communities to develop, implement and support sustainable projects focusing on livelihoods, health and education.

Pioneering in Pokhara, Nepal: The Story of Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge

Historically a commercial hub connecting India and Tibet, Pokhara evolved to be a metropolitan city with far more to offer than just trade. Tucked into the Himalayas and sitting on the picturesque Phewa Lake, Pokhara let nature lead the way. The name for Nepal’s second largest city comes from the Nepali word “Pokhari” meaning “pond” so it’s no surprise that natural formations are Pokhara’s greatest protagonist.

Key Lessons from 3 Caribbean Hotels Leading the Way in Regenerative Practices

We explore leading examples of regenerative tourism practices being implemented by three Caribbean hotels such as Hamanasi Resort in Belize, Jade Mountain in Saint Lucia and Rockhouse Hotel in Jamaica at our panel discussion hosted by Davines in Brooklyn, New York. These organizations are not only adopting regenerative practices, but they are also helping to educate people on the importance of sustainability and creating programs to put regulations in place.
