Regenerative Impact

A Leader Hotel Member of Regenerative Resorts, Fogo Island Inn offers a contemporary take on an authentic Newfoundland aesthetic all while striving to minimize impact on the surrounding environment and uplift the local community via its social business model.

Fogo Island Inn has been a driving force in fortifying culture and place by catalyzing a renaissance of traditional building techniques. In partnership with local builders, Shorefast Foundation has created a heritage collection of wooden boats and has also begun a groundbreaking boatbuilding program with students and staff at the local high school to pass on the knowledge of the punts to future generations.
At Fogo Island Inn, guests can opt in to achieve carbon neutrality for their stay. The inn provides guests with an estimate of the carbon footprint of their visit and the option to purchase carbon offsets through the Newfoundland Climate and Ecosystems Conservancy Project. Other initiatives include collecting rainwater from the roof and storing and filtering it for various uses. Solar thermal panels on the roof supply hot water for radiant heating as well as for laundry and kitchen equipment.
The Inn aims for 80 percent of its ingredients to come from Fogo Island and local suppliers in the surrounding region. Dining options include berries that grow in barrens and bogs; edible plants plucked from shorelines and woodlands; and vegetables and rhubarb fresh from the garden or overwintered in grass-topped root cellars. The Inn also operates a zero-waste kitchen, using bottling, pickling and fermentation to preserve food surpluses.
Owned by a registered charity called Shorefast, Fogo Island Inn is a social business and 100% of operating surpluses are re-invested back into the community to stimulate local employment, sourcing, infrastructure investment, and support community programs.
