Get to know this urban concept hotel pioneering social change.

As Regenerative Travel’s first urban member, Eaton DC sets the benchmark for stylish city hotels dedicated to being a force for good. Since opening in 2018 as Eaton Workshop’s flagship location, DC has incorporated an ethos of progressive positive impact with a mission to transform what a hotel can be.

A lively microcosm of the city, Eaton is home to a cinema, library, radio station, yoga studio, speakeasy, rooftop bar, coworking space and art gallery. The hotel has become the central gathering place for kindred spirits and the over 100 advocacy groups the brand actively partners with, who share the brand’s progressive vision of a better world.

When it comes to ethical operations Eaton also sets the bar high, the brand is in the final stages of B-Corp certification, 67% of the global leadership is BIPOC, and 67%% are women or LGBTQ+ while 72% of their leadership in DC is BIPOC, and 82% are women or LGBTQ+. Eaton has developed a mandatory paid Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion curriculum for all employees, with training taking place 4 times a year. The building itself is LEED Gold Certified and harvests and treats rainwater for recirculation throughout the building.

Those that choose to stay in one of the hotel’s 209 stylish rooms are encouraged to forget what they think they know about Washington and uncover the real DC at Eaton. In the historic Shaw neighborhood, steps away from the National Mall, Eaton is an oasis of culture and authenticity in an increasingly plastic world.

Eaton’s ethos of inclusivity and grassroots community engagement has established the brand as a pillar of DC’s progressive ecosystem.

Wellness Sound Bath Session-13
Eaton’s values live in their daily practices and policies. Each element of the hotel—from design, to community-curated programming—seeks to support racial, gender, and ability diversity. From the outset, the hotel has sought to honor Washington, DC’s vibrant African American culture and history, which is thoughtfully woven into the experience. The hotel seeks to create a community “for us, by us” and to prove hospitality should serve all. Eaton regularly provides emergency transitional housing for the unhoused and the brand responded in full force to the pandemic by setting up a 3D printing workshop to manufacture face shields for undersupplied local hospitals via Print 2 Protect. In addition, 72% of the hotel’s leadership is BIPOC, and 82% identify as women or LGBTQ+
As an urban property in the United States’ capital, Eaton recognized that the hotel could serve as a catalyst for environmental progress. They support environmental advocacy work by directly-impacted and indigenous communities. Eaton is also conscious of the hotel’s own environmental footprint, which it is committed to documenting and measuring, and has implemented innovative systems and policies to limit environmental impacts—from rainwater harvesting to only using potted native plants for decor. The building is certified LEED Gold certified
Since opening, Eaton has partnered with over 100 organizations for advocacy on intersectional issues of race, gender and ability and continues to pioneer progressive change through their platform. The hotel has played host as the headquarters for frontline organizations like Freedom Futures Collective speaking out against rampant police violence. Active partner groups include The Movement for Black Lives, Platform Women, Peace Direct, DC Mutual Aid Network, Amazon Watch and Empower DC to name a few.
Eaton make their communities feel safe and seen by authentically manifesting their culture, values, and sensibility. Eaton has coordinated the Wellness program to work with trauma, different levels of income accessibility and to be truly respective of indigenous knowledge. The hotel is proud to see that their clientele reflects the diversity of the city.

Pioneering in Pokhara, Nepal: The Story of Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge

Historically a commercial hub connecting India and Tibet, Pokhara evolved to be a metropolitan city with far more to offer than just trade. Tucked into the Himalayas and sitting on the picturesque Phewa Lake, Pokhara let nature lead the way. The name for Nepal’s second largest city comes from the Nepali word “Pokhari” meaning “pond” so it’s no surprise that natural formations are Pokhara’s greatest protagonist.

Key Lessons from 3 Caribbean Hotels Leading the Way in Regenerative Practices

We explore leading examples of regenerative tourism practices being implemented by three Caribbean hotels such as Hamanasi Resort in Belize, Jade Mountain in Saint Lucia and Rockhouse Hotel in Jamaica at our panel discussion hosted by Davines in Brooklyn, New York. These organizations are not only adopting regenerative practices, but they are also helping to educate people on the importance of sustainability and creating programs to put regulations in place.
