Blue Apple Beach

The happiest hotel in the Caribbean

Kick off your shoes and find your happy place. Blue Apple Beach was designed from the start as an escape from the daily grind—a sunny paradise where the music flows as freely as the rosé. The gorgeous Colombian-Caribbean beach takes center stage at the hotel, allowing you to rejuvenate by doing nothing at all, or seize the day with a scuba session or horseback riding. Blue Apple Beach is also dedicated to improving the lives of the residents of Bocachica, a community on an undeveloped island. In 2018, the hotel formed a nonprofit organization called Green Apple to unite several hotels and restaurants in the region in promoting sustainability and reducing waste.

Regenerative Impact

The happiest hotel in the Caribbean may be well-known for its lively weekend dance parties, but it is as dedicated to outstanding hospitality as it is to creating both environmental and social impact.

Blue Apple Beach makes its own granola, yoghurt, goat’s cheese, bread, and pasta, but also buys speciality and artisanal products from outstanding local suppliers. All food served is made to order from fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local suppliers, with majority coming from the nearby Turbaco region. The hotel also practices sustainable fishing and does not serve any at-risk or endangered marine species.
In 2018, the hotel created the Green Apple Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to changing the way waste and natural resources are managed by the hospitality industry in Cartagena. Green Apple currently runs a glass and food waste collection service that has diverted over 90 tons of glass and food waste from landfill. Its glass recycling operation transforms bottles into building-grade sand while food waste is turned into nutrient-rich compost.
The cabañas at Blue Apple are made using local materials and indigenous architectural techniques, as can be seen from the thatch roofing. Each hotel room also features local artwork as well as furniture handmade by local artisans.
Blue Apple employs local people where it can, from Bocachica and from other villages on Tierra Bomba and the islands around Cartagena, and provides subsidized English lessons and interest-free loans to its staff members. 90% of its staff are from under-represented groups.

Pioneering in Pokhara, Nepal: The Story of Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge

Historically a commercial hub connecting India and Tibet, Pokhara evolved to be a metropolitan city with far more to offer than just trade. Tucked into the Himalayas and sitting on the picturesque Phewa Lake, Pokhara let nature lead the way. The name for Nepal’s second largest city comes from the Nepali word “Pokhari” meaning “pond” so it’s no surprise that natural formations are Pokhara’s greatest protagonist.

Key Lessons from 3 Caribbean Hotels Leading the Way in Regenerative Practices

We explore leading examples of regenerative tourism practices being implemented by three Caribbean hotels such as Hamanasi Resort in Belize, Jade Mountain in Saint Lucia and Rockhouse Hotel in Jamaica at our panel discussion hosted by Davines in Brooklyn, New York. These organizations are not only adopting regenerative practices, but they are also helping to educate people on the importance of sustainability and creating programs to put regulations in place.
